Transactional Messages vs Marketing Messages

Why it's important to only send transactional messages through Dapple

Dapple’s built-in bulk messaging feature allows organisation users to send messages to multiple creators at once. This can be a powerful way to communicate efficiently, but it’s important to understand the difference between transactional and marketing messages — and to use this feature responsibly.

What Are Transactional Messages?

Transactional messages are one-to-one communications that relate directly to a creator’s interaction with your organisation. These messages are typically expected by the recipient and are essential to their experience on the platform.

Examples include:

  • Notifying a creator that their submission has been received, moved to a new stage, or selected.

  • Asking for missing information related to a submission.

  • Providing time-sensitive updates about submission deadlines or requirements.

  • Clarifying details specific to a creator’s submission or project.

These messages are permitted under Dapple’s bulk messaging feature, as they are directly tied to a creator's participation and serve a clear operational purpose.

What Are Marketing Messages?

Marketing messages are promotional in nature and are typically sent to encourage future participation, promote opportunities, or build general awareness. These messages are not tied to a specific action the recipient has already taken.

Examples include:

  • Announcing a new open call or project that creators might want to apply to.

  • Promoting events, newsletters, or social media channels.

  • Sharing updates about your organisation that aren't related to a creator’s submission.

Marketing messages should not be sent using Dapple’s bulk messaging tool. Sending promotional content through this channel may violate anti-spam laws, damage trust with your audience, and undermine the purpose of the feature.

Why This Matters

Creators trust that messages sent through Dapple are relevant and important. If bulk messaging is misused for promotional content, it risks:

  • Confusing or frustrating creators.

  • Reducing open and response rates.

  • Breaching privacy expectations or regulations such as GDPR or CAN-SPAM.

We want Dapple to be a space where communication is clear, respectful, and purposeful. That means using bulk messaging only for what it’s intended: essential updates related to submissions.

If You Want to Send Marketing Messages

If you’d like to reach out to creators for promotional or marketing purposes, we recommend:

  • Building a mailing list (with consent) using tools designed for marketing communications.

  • Exporting data and importing into external marketing platforms

  • Linking to new open calls or updates via your Dapple profile or website.

If you’re unsure whether a message qualifies as transactional, it’s safest to treat it as marketing and use a dedicated tool outside Dapple.
